A braid or braids, also known as a plait or plaits or a tress or tresses, or in colloquial US usage, pigtail or pigtails, is a type of hairstyle usually worn by women with long hair in which all or part of one's hair is separated into strands, normally three, and then plaited or braided together, typically forming one braid hanging down at the back of the head or two braids hanging down on either side of the head. See also cornrows, queue, crown braid (below), Dutch braid and pigtail.

A Valencian fallera hairstyle is a traditional women's hairstyle typical of Valencia and its Falles celebration, and reminiscent of the "Princess Leia hairstyle" of Star Wars fame. It is an elaborate hairstyle consisting of two spiralled buns on either side of the head and two braids wound around the back of the head, with twisted strands of hair in different figures in the middle of the braids. This hairstyle is reminiscent of the one found on the ancient statue of the Lady of Elx.

Although slavery greatly restricted the ability of Americans of African descent to practice their cultural traditions, many practices, values, and beliefs survived and over time have modified or blended with white culture. There are some facets of African-American culture that were accentuated by the slavery period. The result is a unique and dynamic culture that has had and continues to have a profound impact on mainstream American culture, as well as the culture of the broader world.

African American hair, and African American hairstyles are the diverse ways that African American men and women style their hair. Because many black people have hair that is thick with tighter and smaller curls than people of other races, unique hair styles have developed. In addition to this, many black hairstyles have historical connections to African culture. Since hair is a distinguishing feature of African origins, western beauty ideals characterized black hair, especially the hair of black women, as un-attractive.
